Economist as a PM – Boon or Bane
Einstein once quoted”The only thing that interferes with my learning in education”
So Dr. Singh a Cambridge university economic scholar, with a DPhil from Oxford and an Indira Gandhi era bureaucrat has always been bounded and surrounded by his age long studied economic theories and models and this has been his major setback as a Prime Minister. He has just stuck to the tried and tested economic jargons of economic growth and inflation.
Dr. Singh has always been credited for the economic reform in the early 90’s as an architect of economic freedom in India. And he surely deserves all the accolades as an economist, but the crown of success must be placed on PV Narsimha Roa’s bold decision making and leadership and also most important the way he cocooned bureaucrat and economic intellectuals like Dr. Singh from all the external pressure.
With India entering a transactional phase in this new decade we surely need long term and bold steps to keep the growth momentum going. Last decade was quite exciting mainly from economic point of view with economy reaching new heights, but the growth was more of a reactive one due to inefficiency removed from the system. The path ahead is not a simple one, India will have to sweat out to maintain growth at all the economic fronts. Every economy has to go through this transactional phase which India will be facing and to pass this juncture without much pain so our growth is not threatened.
We need decision maker who is not afraid to take bold step forward
We need a visionary an out of box thinker who is not bounded by age old economic models. One who can find a way when there is none available in sight. A leader is required at the moment who will pull-up and motivate all the departments and ministries to be accountable and achieve his crafted vision.
I always believe same person can be a success or failure in two different situations and also time, when I look at Dr. Singh he had a tremendous success as an economic bureaucrat at RBI and finance ministry, but with India ready to take a new turn socially as well as economically will find Economist PM as a bane.
