Hard Work Vs Luck

While i was reading today’s article called “To Persevere And Let Go” in The Speaking Tree from Times Of India, my wife narrated a nice story of Ramakrishna which she had read during her childhood. I would like to share the story with you.

There was once a Brahmin who owned a beautiful garden. He was so possessive of his garden that he even did not allow the local boys enter that... One day a cow entered the garden and destroyed some of the plants... The Brahmin became so furious that he beat the cow to death... The Brahmin was clever and thought that as God Indra is responsible for his hands, its not he who killed the cow but God Indra was responsible for killing the cow...

One day God Indra came in the form of a common man to see that Brahman... He praised about everything of that garden and asked him who did that... The Brahmin replied that he was the owner of that garden and it was he who did all the good works for that garden... Then God Indra found the dead body of the cow and asked the Brahmin if he was responsible for killing the cow... The Brahmin replied as God Indra stays on his hands, it was not he but God Indra was responsible for killing that cow...

Suddenly the common man vanished and Indra stood before that Brahmin and said, “ Oh Brahmin, if you take the credit for setting up your garden with your hands, then you should take the blame for killing the cow too!”

Most of us usually take the credit for all the good that happens in our lives, but blame our luck for all the bad things...
