Social Networking
www.sixdegrees.com way back in 1998 which goes to prove that it is not like social networking is a relatively new phenomenon.
The internet has opened the doors to a parallel universe reducing us to mindless zombies where virtual add oils are equivalent to real life milestones. It also means big rather very big money involved. Facebook was recently valued around 2 billion $. Is it not amazing and at the same time a bit uncomfortable to know that your future employer might be scanning your profile getting the dirt on how you are always bitten by the late night party bug. For many people the first thing to do when they get to work in the morning is to login to Facebook or other networking sites and check their notifications and news feed. A lot of times it gets so addictive going through other people’s profile that end up being logged in the entire day and keep taking out 10-15 minutes even hour to check who is online and what the latest notification is. They are totally hooked to the site, and their work definitely suffers because of it.
The tiling is that when you are on such sites, no matter how efficient you are at projecting a certain image, with time, it becomes a pointless exercise to save grace online. Soon, the momentum of these tags increases and there is no quality control to correct the damage. Imagine if you have your boss or your friend list and your friend decides to write a historical text on how you had her in splits with the excuse for skipping work, you can be assured that you will have wrath to face at work with this colossal slip. And these slips can actually cost you more than the yelling.
The problem with social networking sites like similar sites is that while they are increasingly becoming user friendly, there are still enough glitches that make it possible for potential stalkers
to really make your life a living hell. It also affects relationships with your friends. The ‘Top Friends’ application, can really be a trouble. Try it and you will know it. From changing your single status to updating what you are up to every hour is not a mark of your rising networking skills but of how there s an acute lack of work in your life. There always be the difference between real life and virtual life and it is up to you to decide what you want your life to centre around.
