Let's be engineers, shall we!?

PhD in Engineering at University
Here you go- another success story of IIT-JEE qualifier. This is an amazing news in people's life. I see this in the newspaper and feel really good about the lucky bunch of people who clearly demonstrate an extraordinary level of hard work and commitment to one cause. But then I see what they have to say to express their feeling about the success that they have achieved by cracking , what is often said about it, one of the toughest competitions on earth. One goes something like ....." I am really happy with the sussess. I really wanna take IAS as soon as I get close to graduate from IIT, such and such...." or " I am delighted on the success. I would like to thank my parents and family for their support. I can now think about taking CAT and do an MBA when I graduate...".

Seldom do I find or should I say, never do I find anyone saying things like I can now go on to become a good engineer. I want to contribute to knowledge and development of new technologies. I want to really understand the aspects of engineering and really want to work my way up to learning and implementing technology.

The crude fact is, we fail to give the vision to students in India. We think hard work is the way out of poverty, restricted lifestyle, vegetated life and so on and so forth. This is true but that's not all.

Government of India has to commit to a wealth of resources to train young students as engineers. We need engineers as a developing economy. We want to have a vision to contribute to knowledge that the world needs. We want to establish ourselves as a nation where education means something. We fail to instil the feeling among students why they should do something apart from it is good to do that or doing that will get them a job.

There is not much point to immediately quit engineering or not consider engineering at all after working tremendously hard for four and often five years. We need other professionals too. We need managers, we need civil servants but why waste four year and government  resources to learn something that you are never going to use in your profession. How can someone have such clear idea that being an IAS is better than an engineer or scientist or for that matter a manager.

We need reform. There are major changes we need in our education system to bring about efficiency. We need to churn the resources and advocate vision to our young minds. Competition is good but think about the scope of it. The relevance of the competition to your future and brainstorm your achievements.
