The Power of the Mind and Addiction
The Power of the Mind and Addiction
While we have managed to somehow rationalize addiction as never before, the truth remains that nobody truly understands the real roots of addiction. The widely popular theory, as set forth by some scientists and medical doctors, and endorsed by the 12 step creators, in which addiction is a threefold complex issue involving the spiritual, the mind and the diseased body is certainly one of the more credible and compelling theories, especially if you believe that, in order for human beings to be happy and fully functional, there is a need for the various “selves” to properly align.
Having said this, however, many believe that some aspects of addiction actually are created, in part, by the mind or rather the mind power – the subconscious part – which dictates much of our actions and reactions. The subconscious is also responsible for regulating the ‘instinctive” part of our brain – which triggers “coping mechanisms” and, therefore, has enormous power in dictating how we actually end up dealing with our daily lives.
Interestingly, the brain is also known, of course, for its awesome healing abilities and this, is where an addict can redirect and reshape their subconscious brain – by sending it a completely different set of “recordings”. In other words, changing the initial pre recorded message with one that is more positive, calming and healing. This can and must be done in order to help the addict find any type of recovery and, it is truly an awesome sight to behold – watching the powers of the mind help overcome addiction, sadness and depression.

In fact, one third of the basics of the 12 step program are based on this very premise – believing that you must (and you can) focus on completely altering the mind, your way of thinking, in order to successfully turn a using addict into a recovering one. By relying on not only the mind power, but a believe in something greater than yourself – you can recover and be whole again.
Of course, most will agree that it is not quite as simple as all that – especially since many of us have been programmed with incredibly complex and confusing messages – due, in part to the way our world thinks we should be thinking and behaving.
However, ultimately, the healing part of our mind can overcome and help us get better – if we believe it can and, if we let it.
