I don't know exactly if Bioinformatics as a undergraduate course work or a post graduate degree in India stands creditable to the market requirements around the globe, Talking of around the globe the scenario in India itself is worsened! We have thousands and thousands of students stepping out of hundreds of universities and institutes in india with a successful degree in Bioinformatics and staying along with it. The companies those have projects in Bioinformatics prefer core programmers than biologists turned programmers. So what should be done in this scenario. We have heard around in 2003 that Biosciences will be reaping a million job by the end of this decade. Its already 2009 and we are yet to witness even a thousand. Big outsourcing giants wipro Infosys TCs who used to hire students from all stream are stuck in this cloud of recession. When he s showing Pink slips to its experienced core programmers scenario seems to be worsening for Bioinformaticians. Its not easy for all bioinformaticians to travel abroad for higher studies and if we talk about phd in India the scenario is not that good. The basic requirement for a phd in life science from a good institute requires JRF from DBT or CSIR. The course curriculum s so vast and includes such a big loop of students into it that it becomes tough for any bioinformatics student to really clear the exam. The seats being too limited adds up to the woe.. In such scenarios, I would heartily appreciate comments. If I am wrong enlighten me!
