Tablet PCs to become Farmer's tool

Marketing
The Department of Agriculture (DA), Philippines, has proposed a low cost Tablet PC called Pinoy Tablet Computer that empowers farmers with critical information such as soil nutrients and farm goods market. DA is working together with Hyderabad, India based International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) to develop an affordable Tablet PC. The DA is seeking partnerships for this proposed low cost Tablet PC.

DA’s extension workers (or technicians) who educate farmers will have ubiquitous access to critical farm information using the Tablet PC. The proposed Tablet will have a 24/7 access to internet and will be GIS enabled. GIS will help the farmers determine whether the crop they are planting is suitable for their location.

India has in the past few months seen a slew of low cost Tablet PCs launched by Indian Tablet PC makers. ICRISAT’s network in India will provide assistance to Philippines in fabricating the hardware. ICRISAT is also facilitating to provide Agropedia, software developed to help Indian Farmers. ‘Agropedia’ is a farm management system developed by a consortium seven institutions including ICRISAT. The DA-Bureau of Agricultural Research (BAR) will provide content for the Tablet.

The DA is looking for partnerships with other institutions for providing internet connectivity and localizing the Agropedia software for Filipino farm workers and farmers.
