I attended the recent barcamp in Joho Bahru, Malaysia(6-7th December). Barcamp is an open source , international network of user generated conference(or unconference as many like to call it).The first barcamp focused mainly on web applications and other related open source technologies. Later the concept spilled over to health care, political organization and so on.

It was amazing to find people coming together to unconference about things that they like, things that they think they like and things they don't like but pretend to like it anyway. :-)

I could sense a combined consciousness emerging from all the to and fro activity. A new technosociality coming out of how people are using technology to communicate and connect. This thought pretty soon , like an atomic chain reaction, went on a wide rampage and finally settled to 'web consciousness'. Where does consciousness come from? In very short, I believe it is an emergent phenomena from the complexity of the system. And a system consists of mainly two parts: Components(or Nodes) and Connections. The Components might be very simple in structure: like neurons, but it is the way they are connected that makes it full of information. Emergent behaviors occur because of the complex connections. I believe technology has made connections between Nodes(People) very dense and complex and it is beginning to show new emergent behavior(like consciousness).

In the barcamp I talked about the deep connection between mind, matter and mathematics. Here is a summary of what I talked about:

Think about Theory of Relativity. Einstein derived it without a single experiment. The theory was an example of pure mental product. And most of all, the results were counter-intuitve (time slows down!). But it was tested to be surprisingly accurate. How did a product purely of mind confirm so accurately with reality? What is with mathematics that it confirms so accurately with nature?

Einstein said:
How can it be that mathematics, being after all a product of human thought which is independent of experience, is so admirably appropriate to the objects of reality?
And how did it happen that something so counter intuitive be so true? Apparently nature does not care about our intuition.

Could it be that mathematics is an intermediary between or mind and universe, and the structure of our mind and universe is the same? I believe so. Our mind is limited by our intuition and mathematics is a bridge between our mind and mathematics, it is a tool to transcend our faulty intuition. And why is mathematics so accurate in describing the universe? I believe it is because the structure of our mind is the same as that of the universe. The psychological laws and the physical laws are one and the same.

Also look at the web. It is just catching up with mathematics. Take a look at the upcoming video game F.E.A.R -2. It uses STRIPS algorithm for movement, which is well over 37 years old mathematics. Even Google uses most of the tools which are more than 100 years old, in its PageRank algorithm. The power of higher mathematics is just beginning to show in the world wide web. It is a new revolution.

I also talked about how the concept of local maxima(a mathematical phenomena) is closely related to the laws of success.

At the end of the presentation I concluded with a promise to start a blog on mathematics and mind and how to use that knowledge for personal development(how to be a genius!).

Tell me your thoughts on this connection between Mind,Matter and Mathematics! :-)

PS: Soon you will see a post on Complexity Theory and Global Consciousness.
