How I started my first online venture
I am a professional programmer and software engineer. I develop software using Java, PHP, Ajax, Agile technology. All time I wanted to have a site which could give me a space where as a programmers I can post any question or queries, even I would get an opportunity to interact with other professionals in the same fields. I searched a lot and have found lots of forums but they are not fully dedicated to programming and technologies etc. Even in some forums they ask for small fees to join. I was looking for completely free portal where I would get articles as well forums as well as option to post articles. Even there should be some code gallery where code snippets of several languages should be posted so that any programmers can get help at any point of time and don’t need to google for it. Then I decided that I should have a portal of that kind of myself where people can get all these services free of cost. But I didn't have any idea where to start this.
I studied several articles on this and I followed few steps and now I got a very busy site which has got good traffic and people started interacting with each other, my site is www.techcubetalk.com .
Here I will share the hurdles and obstacles I encounter during publishing.
- Firstly I bought a hosting server and a unavailable domain name (www.techcubetalk.com).
- I installed free CMS software. I wanted a forum and a module to publish article/tutorials. I chose SMF (Simple Machine Forum) and Tinyportal the third party plug-in.
- I selected a good theme for my site the Apple Mac theme. Check this www.techcubetalk.com
- Now I wrote some articles here and also asked some of my programmer friends to join in the forum and to write articles.
- Then I started to develop popularity of TechCuBe Talk, I started interacting in various forums. I put the url www.techcubetalk.com in the forum signature. This attracted lots of traffic to my site.
- I started to post some articles in various blog site so that I can attract others.
- I followed SEO (search Engine Optimization) process and put good keywords and description so that Google/Yahoo can find my site and can index them.
- Here I must mention two good sites from google which helped a lot. The 1st one is: http://www.google.com/webmasters/ this actually helps me to do some analysis on SEO and keywords that helps my site to appear in the search list.
- The 2nd one is: http://www.google.com/analytics/ it helped me a lot in analyzing the visitors in my site.
- Lately I added Flagcounter which shows the location of the people visiting my site and it has become a habit of me to see a new flag.
So these are the techniques and process I followed to start my first web venture. Hope this helps you also to start your own online venture. Let me know if you need any kind of help and also don't forget to visit my site www.techcubetalk.com
