IGNOU's art class in Tihar
It would be conducted by the students and teachers of IGNOU's School of Performing and Visual Arts (SOPVA). While male inmates can learn painting and theatre, the music workshop is for female inmates.
"The workshop focuses on the basics of arts and provides a firsthand experience in painting, music and theatre arts to the inmates," an IGNOU statement said.
SOPVA director Sunil Kumar said the workshop would not only introduce the inmates to fine arts but will give them a chance to actively participate in the activities and produce their own work of art.
"This exposure may also be helpful for the inmates in opting for this as profession and mode of expression through arts of their choice later on," Kumar said.

"To conclude the workshop, a music and play presentation and an exhibition of paintings shall be made by the inmates on the basis of what they have learnt," he added.
IGNOU pro-vice chancellor Pravin Sinclair said the concept of training inmates in arts will not be confined to Tihar Jail only but similar activities may be conducted in other jails as well.
