Exploring new links in Indian way of life
Chinmayananda’s aim was to build a study and research centre for western and eastern scholars where they could come and stay and thus have a closer view of the Vedic period. Now, the centre is gearing up to enter a new phase to link Sanskrit, the classic language, with Indian aesthetic views.
Chinmaya International Foundation (CIF), the Centre for Sanskrit Research and Indology has completed the formalities to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with various institutions, including Hyderabad University, IIT Hyderabad and Ignou. The ancient ‘naalukettu’ will be converted into a gathering place for Sanskrit scholars and art enthusiasts.
The CIF along with ‘Shodh Sansthan,’ a Central government-sponsored organisation, had signed an MOU with the Department of Ayurveda, Yoga and naturopathy, unani, siddha and homeopathy (Ayush), in March 2010 and received the financial assistance for preservation and digitalisation of medical manuscripts of Kerala. Now this duo is again set to open a new link with Dhwani, the Sanskrit literature with Indian aesthetical interpretations. A six- member committee headed by Dileep Kumar Rana as director and Dr K G Paulose as chairman has already started the initial procedures for these unique projects which unveil the little known vistas of Indian aesthetic scenario.
“Sanskrit literature is closely related to ancient Indian aesthetics,” said Dr K G Paulose, chairman, CIF Shodh Sansthan.

Though the origin of Dhvanyaloka of Anandavardhana and Lochanam of Abhinava Gupta are rooted in the Northern end of India, various versions on Dhvanyaloka were drafted in Kerala. In that sense there is some geographical and political importance for the studies related to Dhwani,” Paulose said.
Amidst various versions on Dhvanyaloka formed in Kerala, the most prominent works are Dhasharadhi, Anjanam, Kaumudi and Balapriya. All these versions stress on the basic norms related to literary scenario, Paulose, a deep- rooted scholar in Sanskrit and former Vice- Chancellor of Kerala Kalamandalam, said. As a curtain raiser for the mega project, CIF Shoda Sansthan in association with Centre for Heritage Studies (CYS), Hill Palace, Tripunithura, will organise a colloquium on Indian Aesthetics: Discourse on Dhvani at CIF, Veliyanad.
The colloquium will be held on Sunday at Adishankara Nilayam. It will be inaugurated by K K N Kurup. CIF Shodh Sansthan director Dileep Kumar Rana will welcome the gathering and K G Paulose will deliver the presidential address.
As CIF Shodhan Sansthan is also planning to publish many invaluable manuscripts related to the works on DhvanyaLoka, a book titled ‘Akhyana’ of Manoj V R will also be released on the occasion. After the inaugural session will be the formal beginning of the colloquium which will be chaired by Chathanathu Achuthanunni.
V P Udayakumar will present a paper on Sphota and Dhwani which will analyse the segments of Dhvanyaloka. N S Sharmila will present the linguistic speculations of Anandavardhana which will be followed by the definition of Dhwani by Jayanisha Kurungot. Concepts of Gunibhava of suggested sense will be presented by S Anilkumar.
The third session will be chaired by Dr C Rajendran in which ‘Krauncha incident’ in relation to creativity will be presented by M Vijayakumar. M Sathian will present the concept of lavanya and N A Shihab will present a paper on Auchithya and Dhwani.
Structural analysis, the fourth session, will be chaired by Dr P V Ramankutty. Jeena George will present the Concept of Guna in Dhvanyaloka and Anil Narayanan will present a paper on Vaasthu Dhwani.
G Sudev Krishna Sarma will present a paper on the concept of Samvada. K G Ambika’s presentation Itivritha and Rasa will focus on the importance of the content and emotions.
Fifth and the concluding session will be highlight of the Colloquium which will actually link Dhwani with the abstract dimensions of Indian Aesthetics.
This session will be chaired by Dr K M Krishnan. Dr Pramitha will present Sankuka’s concept of Anukarana. V R Arun Jagannathan will present a paper on the ‘Aesthetic Experience in Transpersonalisation’.
V Nirmala will present the intricacies of Saivism and Rasa Realisation. The last presentation will be the Sthaayi of Santha which will be prepared by Saritha Maheswaran.
