Cannot open your default email folders. The file *.ost is not an offline folder file.
MS Outlook and MS Exchange Server together provide synchronization of your mail folder & give you an idyllic environment so that you access your folder in Offline mode. In MS Outlook, there is a separate profile for every user which he/she can access in Offline mode. A copy of user mailbox is saved on user PC in OST format.
But in some cases OST file fails to synchronize in MS Exchange Server environment. In that scenario, when you try to mount your offline folder from Exchange Server, you may across some error messages like:
"Cannot open your default email folders. The file *.ost is not an offline folder file."
Solution,
To resolve the above errors, locate OST file with the following path: "\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook"
You can use the following steps:
• Rename/delete affected OST: If you have a backup of your OST emails, then you can rename or delete OST.
• Repair OST: Repair OST by using integrity checker tool (scanost.exe).
Even after you fail to access the OST data, then follow the final step:
