New iPad Wi-Fi issues and solution
Apple has received a plethora of complaints on the Wi-Fi connectivity failure of its new iPad 3. Soon after the new iPad’s release, complaints have been pouring in on Apple’s support forums over the Wi-Fi issues. As per reports, Apple has begun an investigation to the Wi-Fi issue and has requested AppleCare staff to replace the affected units. Apple launched the new iPad early March 2012 with huge fanfare. Though there are less changes in hardware aspects, customers accepted the new iPad with huge fervor. But, unluckily, several units of the new iPad reportedly have Wi-Fi malfunction.
Wi-Fi issues
What the new iPad users complain of the device’s Wi-Fi connectivity are weak reception, slow performance and sluggish transfer speeds. The new iPad doesn’t show better Wi-Fi signal strength when other iOS devices in the same room get full strength. Transferring data on the affected iPad is often hell, complain the users. On Apple’s Support Communities site, around 900 people have so far posted replies to a thread, “poor Wi-Fi reception on new iPad?” One of recent replies goes like this,
“How long before these Wi-Fi problems are fixed!?! This is ridiculous. I cannot connect to the internet in the hotel I’m staying at. I stayed here a couple nights ago on the second floor and everything was fine. I stayed on the third floor tonight and couldn’t ever connect. The network would show up with a check mark beside it but it wouldn’t ever take me to the “accept terms” page. It works right away on my iPhone 4S. I thought when companies came out with newer models they were upgrades? The new iPad seems to be a complete downgrade,” says a user bmseckinger.
Hundreds of similar complaints are there on Apple Support Forum and others. Many say that they don’t get better Wi-Fi connectivity when the iPad is placed in some distance to the router. At that place, their iPhone 4S, however, works nicely. Many others complain that their iPads fails only when used for data transfer with other devices, say iPad 2, iPhone 4S or others.
Apple’s response
The Cupertino firm hasn’t yet made any official statement over the issue. Yet, 9to5Mac reports that Apple has announced a probe to the Wi-Fi issue and requested AppleCare staff to capture the affected iPads with replacements. The tech blog says it has accessed to an internal report of Apple to make such a claim. As per the internal AppleCare report 9to5Mac has published, Apple says “symptoms can include, but are not limited to: intermittent connectivity, slow WiFi speeds, and WiFi network not seen.”
Solutions
Since Apple has evidently taken the issue seriously, we can soon expect a firmware update from Apple. The company used to upgrade its iOS for the hardware complaints reported with its new products. The new iPad currently runs on iOS 5.1, the latest update to Apple’s famous iOS 5. Maybe, the company will be coming with an iOS 5.1.1 to solve the Wi-Fi issue and other bugs. Of course, Apple will be making a deep probe into the Wi-Fi issues of the new iPad, once it gets the affected units from users.
Are you not patient enough to wait for Apple’s solution? OSXDaily has noted the compliant and come up with a pragmatic solution. OSXDaily suggests iPad 3 users to make a try with its tips before rushing to AppleCare for the solution. Here are OSXDaily’s tips to solve the new iPad’s Wi-Fi connectivity issue.
• Open Settings and tap on “General”
• Tap “Network” and tap “Wi-Fi”
• Tap the blue arrow next to the wireless router you are connected to
• At the next screen, tap “Forget this Network”
• Go back to Wi-Fi and rejoin the network you just forgot
If not getting okay, follow these steps,
• If Wi-Fi is still not working, try this as well:
• From Settings, tap “General” then “Reset”
• Tap “Reset Network Settings”
• Reboot the iPad
• Connect to a wireless network again
Since resetting network preferences may lose your router passwords, OSXDaily warns users to be sure to have those handy beforehand. The solution has received a mixed repose from users. Anyway, you can try it before making a call to AppleCare.
