Screw Classifier Designed To Settle Relatively Coarse Particles

Spiral Classifier is designed to settle and dewater relatively coarse particles from high volume, low percent volume solid streams. It will separate suspended particles at 35 mesh at a flow rate of 5000 GPM. The special design of this unit also permits it to hydraulically transfer surges of up to 10,000 GPM of wastewater without overflowing. The Screw Classifier is a grit conveying and dewatering unit which typically receives grit slurry from a Vortex Grit Separator, an Aerated Grit Chamber, or a Grit Collector. The Shafted Grit Screw Classifier settling tank is designed to effectively separate and settle the grit from the water.

Maintained flow velocities prevent any suspended organic matter from settling with the mineral. Furthermore, wash water enters from the screw classifier into the bottom of the hopper and, aided by the central stirrer, the grit and sand particles abrade against each other, scouring any attached organic matter from their surface. This scouring process is further enhanced by air agitation. Eventually, the grit is conveyed by the screw classifier, washed, dewatered and discharged into a container. Removal of organic matter greater than 97 percent is attainable.

Classification is an operation in which solid grains of mixed sizes and often different specific gravities are allowed to settle through a fluid under such conditions that a separation will be made between slower and faster settling particles. The main purpose of the Classifier is to carry out such separation, so as to effect a definite change in the size composition of the granular material. At the same time, the Classifier accomplishes the equally important function of dewatering the grit and elevating the grit for discharge. In every classifier operation, there will be a feed, a rotating screw, an underflow and an overflow.
