Kolkata : City of Joy or City of blazing carnage

Senior Consultant
This blog came around my mind when I had a telephonic conversation with my wife whose is currently in kolkata.Out of 12 months , people celebrate or have pooja in west bengal for around 7-8 months .I am a firm believer of God , but during some of the incidents in past few months in the city of joy has forced me to re-think.Not as agnostic but as the direction of my belief.

The incident which happened Stephen Court in Park Street on 23th March 2010 which has killed so many youngsters, there were professionals who had joined their jobs some 7-8 days back, not knowing that this might be their last job of their life. There are family members who are waiting for their near dear once since Tuesday and have not returned , lingering around the SSKM hospital to get the glimpse of near dear one dead or alive.Today the most shocking news I got about the incident was the file of Stephen Court was missing from the muncipal corporation and on other hand the death toll has risen today by 30.No action has been taken by the government.I ask god, people spend most of times worshipping you in this state be it durga puja, kali puja, annapurna pooja or Maa Sheetla Pooja , then why so many innocent deaths.

Is it we should increase the frequency of our pujas, or take some action .The answer is definitely the latter one.God helps those who help themselves. It is we citizens who need to be cautious , at least in presence of such lethargic government machinery. We need to ask the authorities the credibilty of the safety measures, particularly for buildings which are 100 years or older. Please ask government officials or authority members of their buildings to check the safety of the buildings in which you are working.

Enforce safety measures and drills to check the credibity of the fire safety devices and stop such carnage from happening which kill so many innocent people.
