Think out of the Box
I came across this example when i had to attend one motivational seminar You may have heard this example or story before but don't jump onto conclusion too quickly.
Here is a story that is often told in personal development circles by people that generally spectacularly miss the point.
Three builders on a site for a new children's hospital were approached by a visiting dignitary and asked about what work they were doing.
The first builder instantly replied "I'm building this wall."
The second builder replied "I am building a hospital"
The third builder replied "I am helping to save the lives of children in need"
Some personal development gurus talk about the motivation of the third builder being so much more powerful than the others. Most of the people would vote for third builder and you may have chosen him too. I almost agree with them. I would like to say that some people dont know what these three builders are talking about.
Think on this for a second, depending on your perspective you can get each of these three answers and depending on your current thinking each answer provides a particular type of motivation.
The first builder gets instant results every time he puts another brick on the wall because he is one step closer to completion. Also he can have the pride of a craftsman in the beauty of a job well done or more specifically a wall well built. He is breaking down his big task into small chunks and enjoying the satisfaction of each completion.
The second builder has the overall game plan and can see how his individual efforts fit into the overall context of the work that is being done. If he has pride in his profession this is energy of working on a worthwhile project that is bigger than just his individual contribution. He thinks the bigger picture in his mind.
The third builder is obviously tapping into the overall purpose / mission and increasing his overall feel good factor and contribution to society.
The reality is that these different perspectives and motivations are all important and the best leverage you have is to use all of them.
They all teach some lessons. Rather than supporting only one, we should see individual's vision and perspective.
Now, from now on, when you see or hear someone doing something, think about all sides.
