Will Rahul Gandhi be the Next PM?

Internal Auditor-Operations

New Delhi: While Manmohan Singh, on a victory lap goes about the business of building a list of probables to join his candidates, many wonder if Rahul Gandhi will indeed be a part of the team.

The day the election results were declared and Rahul’s contribution to the victory run for the Congress party was public knowledge, PM Manmohan Singh had said that he would like to have the young Gandhi scion in his Cabinet.

But two days since, most say that it is more than likely that the son will follow mother Sonia’s footsteps and like her, refuse the plum post to build the party instead.

A no from Rahul could help him go a long way within the Congress.

“I must humbly deny this post,” Sonia had said in 2004 while declining to be the Prime Minister by the virtue of being the leader of the winning party.

After Sonia's renunciation in 2004, which was amply played up by the party, Rahul's refusal to a government berth is sure to be used by the Congress party as another sign of the spirit of sacrifice by the Gandhi family.

While refusing the PM’s offer on May 16, results day of General Elections, Rahul had said that the offer may have been the PM's prerogative but personally he (Rahul) would like to do what he was doing.

“I have a job to do. It’s to help the youth of this country enter politics and to change the way politics works,” Rahul, the charmer had said.

Rahul's big plan is to bring his party back to power in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The state is important as it also has 21 seats in the Lok Sabha. That plan so far seems to be working. Also, bringing Congress back on its feet in Bihar, Gujarat and Orissa is his priority.

What Rahul may insist on is that instead of him, his boys or young MPs like Sachin Pilot, Jitin Prasad and Milind Deora are given a Red Beacon (lal batti) car given to ministers.

Though the clamour for Rahul to have his own (lal batti) continues.

Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said, “Of course, there may be no inherent contradiction between being both in the government and doing party work.”

So over the next few days, one will come to know whether Rahul has said ‘yes’ to yes minister.
