appear to have started dogging the Metro — first Delhi, then Mumbai and now
Bangalore. On Monday morning, a pierrein forcement bent down completely at the
Metro station area on CMH Road. Two workers escaped with minor injuries.
Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRC) managing director N Sivasailam, who
visited the spot, has ordered an inquiry.
With the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation accident still fresh in public memory, Monday’s crash triggered new fears among Bangaloreans. The accident occurred around 11.30 am. According to BMRC, it was a ‘slight slippage’ of the reinforcement due to handling error, which led to bending of the steel cage.
However, as this happened within the barricaded area, it did not cause any public inconvenience. Two workers, Beerhain and Lakwendra Nayak, who were on lapping work, escaped with minor cuts and skin abrasions. They were rushed to Chinmaya Mission Hospital. After an hour of treatment, they returned to work. ‘‘It’s strange. This is the first time we witnessed such a problem. We are looking into the reasons. We have already started removing the bent reinforcement and will replace it with a fresh structure,’’ the contractors said.
