Can Nandan succeed? I really hope so!
The appointment of Nandan Nilekani as a cabinet minster level person responsible for the national unique ID card system was probably the most exciting thing that has happened to India in many years. Every educated person has been complaining non-stop about corrupt politicians and our inability to change the system. This appointment however makes me greatly optimistic. We finally have one of our own at the helm, with the authority to make a difference.
I know there are many skeptics out there who feel that "the system" will not let him succeed. And they are probably right. But what if they were wrong! What if, Mr. Nilekani surmounts all obstacles and delivers this ID system that enables us to finally find a way to deliver social services with 90% less corruption, increases security, and in general helps us move India forward by around 20 years?
Success of this experiment by the PM would open the door hopefully to many more qualified people playing an active role in shaping the country. His failure of course would mean we are back to square one-- standing on the sidelines of history while other countries leave us further and further behind.
