Stevia Plant - A Herbal Medicine

Stevia is an herbal sweetener derived from the Stevia plant. Today it is an important constituent of diabetes diet. Stevia is useful for the prevention and cure of Type 2 diabetes and the plant’s extract is available for use in two forms, as a powder form and as standardized extract for consumption. The Stevia leaves’ powder is traditionally used and the standardized extract is 90% of Stevioside. It is available in liquid form and has a white powder that is soluble in water .Stevia is 300 times sweeter than sugar and the big plus point is that it has no calories. Taking large amounts of Stevia plant’s extract is harmful, so the extract should be used in fewer amounts. Stevia can be used in amounts of 10 mg for every kilogram of the person’s weight, which means a person of 70 kg weight can take maximum of 700 gm of Stevia in one day. Stevia should not be consumed beyond these limits and many websites now tell how to use Stevia. After the intake,Stevia extract is a bit bitter like licorice and so it is mixed with a liquid while consuming. Stevia is now available in different flavors like mint, vanilla and many more. Now the use of Stevia as a food additive is legalized in many countries.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Stevia product rebaudioside A (rebiana) as a general purpose sweetener in December 2008. Rebiana is an ingredient derived from the leaf of the Stevia plant. Being low in calories, Stevia helps in weight management and it also aids in keeping the blood sugar level in balance. For healing, Stevia can be directly applied to cuts and wounds and research also shows that Stevia helps in digestion. It is also known that Stevia has therapeutic benefits in acne, seborrhea, dermatitis, eczema and hypoglycemic etc. Besides the steviosides and rebaudiosides Stevia contains other constituents like sterols, triterpenes, flavonoids and tannins. It has an extremely rich volatile oil comprising rich proportions of aromatics, aldehyde, monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes. These and some other unidentified constituents probably have some impact on human physiology and may help explain some of the reported therapeutic uses of Stevia.Stevia is also known to have hypoglycemic, cardiovascular, antimicrobial actions and also positive effects on the skin and reproduction. Stevia India is working for the wide spread use of Stevia in our country.
