Stevia Plant - A Herbal Medicine
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Stevia product rebaudioside A (rebiana) as a general purpose sweetener in December 2008. Rebiana is an ingredient derived from the leaf of the Stevia plant. Being low in calories, Stevia helps in weight management and it also aids in keeping the blood sugar level in balance. For healing, Stevia can be directly applied to cuts and wounds and research also shows that Stevia helps in digestion. It is also known that Stevia has therapeutic benefits in acne, seborrhea, dermatitis, eczema and hypoglycemic etc. Besides the steviosides and rebaudiosides Stevia contains other constituents like sterols, triterpenes, flavonoids and tannins. It has an extremely rich volatile oil comprising rich proportions of aromatics, aldehyde, monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes. These and some other unidentified constituents probably have some impact on human physiology and may help explain some of the reported therapeutic uses of Stevia.Stevia is also known to have hypoglycemic, cardiovascular, antimicrobial actions and also positive effects on the skin and reproduction. Stevia India is working for the wide spread use of Stevia in our country. Research is going on all over the world for knowing the other benefits of Stevia as an herbal medicine and in due course of time more usefulness of Stevia is bound to be known.
