Rounding off to the nearest integer

Project Manager Bombay
How many of you have been noticing this -

When you make a purchase at any retail store, esp. the chain stores like Food Bazaar, Spencers, etc. the cashier tends to round off the bill to the near highest or lowest integer.

Rs. 1724.86 becomes Rs. 1725/-

Rs. 804.5 becomes Rs. 805/-

- this happens when you make a payment in cash - when the decimal amounts on the totals they finally bill is not accepted anymore in cash denominations.

- AND this ALSO happens when you are paying by a credit card that the cashier rings the rounded amount on the bill????

Ideally, in both forms of payment, you SHOULD be charged the amount on the bill.

(but this policy to round off, of the brand/retail owner itself shows that the ~chalta hae - no one will mind~ attitude is promoted by established business houses also)

So in this scenario, are you ok -

- that the items are priced with the actual value in decimal denominations on the packing but not rounded off when making a payment?

- to leave small change to the store by rounding off?

- that the value of the item should actually reflect its true value _and you must know the true value_ and not a value to round off currency change denominations.

Have you ever taken this up with any of the store (i.e. if you have paid attention to this [mal-]practice and have been concerned about it) ?? be honest with yourself.
