Recession doesn’t hinder car & bike sales
Domestic passenger car sales wentup by 21.8% in February 2009 to 115,386 units, from 94,757 units in the samemonth last year.
Motorcycle sales in the country duringthe month was up by 15.6% at 491,462 units, against 425,089 units in theyear-ago period, according to the figures released by the Society of IndianAutomobile Manufacturers (SIAM) on Monday.
Total two-wheeler sales in February increased by 16.2% to 630,849 unitscompared with 542,757 units in the same month last year. However, commercialvehicle sales during the month decreased by 31.7% to 31,069 units, from 45,478units during the year-ago period, SIAM said.
Passenger car market leader Maruti Suzuki India continued with healthy sales at62,449 units as against 51,762 units in the same month last year. Hyundai MotorIndia Ltd reported sales of 21,212 as against 14,591 units in February lastyear, while Tata Motors' sales were up marginally at 15,524 units compared with13,451 units last year.
In the motorcycles segment, Hero Honda Motors' sales stood at 3,07,034 unitscompared with 2,47,735 units in the year ago-period. Bajaj Auto's bike sales,however, declined to 90,473 units as against 1,07,768 units in the same monthlast year. TVS Motors' sales decreased marginally to 34,183 units compared with35,410 units last year.
Total scooter sales during the month stood at 1,00,789 units as against 83,256units in February last year with market leader Honda Motorcycle and ScooterIndia selling 58,209 units as against 52,685 units in the same month last year.Hero Honda Motor sales more than doubled at 15,452 units as against 7,577units, while Bajaj Auto's sales were reduced to less than a half at 400 unitsas against 846 units in February last year.
