Is UPA a sinking ship?
Disagreement
over seat sharing has bombed the base of both UPA and NDA. It is more palpable
in the case of the NDA when Naveen Patnaik dumped the big brother and bridged
the gulf between the Left which dreams of the emergence of a non-Congress,
non-BJP alternative, ie Third Front.
Ignoring the mutiny inside, the UPA ship is on the move. The Lalu-Paswan-Mulayam trio remains unpredictable about the course which it might take once the elections are over. They try to evoke both anti-BJP and anti-Congress sentiments in their respective strong turfs and keep their fiefdom free from poaching by friends or foes.
Though unmindful at first, Congress leaders too are now forced to speak out in the open against colleagues in its own UPA house. For UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, the Samajwadi Party that saved the UPA government when the Left forsook them is an opportunist to the core. SP is `not dependable’ they cannot be trusted, quipped Sonia in an election rally on Monday.
Lalu Prasad Yadav finds no reason why the Congress should not be blamed for the demolition of Babri Masjid. Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, who was regarded as a man of few words till few weeks ago, too did recast himself as a shrewd politician who can take on Machiavellians like Lalu to Advani. Moreover, Manmohan Singh has even signalled the possibility of yet another post-poll alliance with the Left parties, which still try to draw energy from anti-Congress, anti-BJP slogans.
NCP leader Sharad Pawar is flexing his muscles to become the next Prime Minister. Many in the UPA and the Third Front finds his claims legitimate and have expressed their willingness to support him in the post-election scenario.
The bloodiest of the assault on the UPA comes from its Dravidian partner DMK, down in Tamil Nadu. As the poll fever is up, DMK chief Karunanidhi found no terrorist in LTTE chief Veluppillai Prabhakaran. Despite having every right to feel offended, the Congress preferred to downplay the pro-LTTE remarks of the veteran. For reasons other than the Congress ire and the health of the UPA, Kalainger Karunanidhi has backtracked. Oops.. LTTE has become a terror outfit in recent times, he quipped.
