The sacred temple of Kedarnath is among the Chardham destinations in Utterakhand, thronged by a number of devotees annually. It is famous because it houses one of the 12 jyotirlingas in India. Impressively built, this temple is among the largest shrines in Himalayas, epitomizing an appealing architecture and grand religious significance. According to Hindu myths, Kedarnath is one of the favorite sites of lord Shiva for meditation & yoga. The holy river Mandakini passes along the town, adding more to its natural grace and religious fervor.

This holy temple is situated atop the Garwal Himalayan range in Indian state of Utterakhand. It cannot be accessed directly by vehicles, and one has to trek uphill 14km from Gaurikund to reach the temple. The foundation of the modern temple was laid down by the great Indian scholar Adi Shankracharya. However, the greatness of this place is mentioned even in Mahabharata epic.

Due to extreme weather conditions, the temple is open for a limited span of time. Winters her are extremely chilly and feature heavy snowfall. It is therefore the temple remains closed during cool months.

To reach to Kedarnath, one can take a bus or taxi from Rishikesh. It takes the same way as to Badrinath initially, but after Ruprayag, the way cuts off to this temple. The taxi will drop you at Gaurikund. The rest of journey, about 14km, will be covered by feet only. It takes around six hours for a normal person to reach Kedarnath from Gaurikund.

Since the trekking routes to the temple are tough and climatic conditions are uncertain either, it is imperative for a pilgrim to be healthy and physically fit.
