BRAND IIT

infosys Mentor and celebrated businessman Narayana Murthi revels in controversies. His complaints about crumbling infra strucutre of Bangaluru and his fights with Devegowda who was questioning the need for IT companies to usurp vast tracts of land at throw away prices are media folklore. Recetly he made a comment about the declining standards of IIT, the holy cows of Indian Higher education which was till recently reserved exclusively for urban elite who chose to graduate and then migrate to US and other Western Countries . Very few of them stayed back and those who did had a management diploma from IIM and were selling consumer durables. Chetan Bhagat who had given up career in investment banking  ( a Technocrat of IIT into investment banking? Yes that is where the bread is buttered pals) shred him to pieces questioning his opinion which demeans IIT grads calling infosys a body shopping unit with pretensions of technology driven. Later he with drew this comment. But have IITs served the purpose for which they were instituted by an act of parliament with autonomy. IITs were meant to be institutes of higher learning to compete with the best in the world. This exclusive club eluded the majority of Indians and those who managed admissions were in to anything which is remotely connected with Engineering or technology. or atleast a majority of them because Vinod Dham co inventor of Pentium chip and a few others were in technoloy business. Many of them were bankers investment bankers angel investors and capital evangelists. Many of our scientists were not from IITS but from other Engineering colleges mosly government run. Why Abdul Kalam our celebrated Missile man is from MIT and not from IIT. We have come across a bunch of IIT grads forming an investment broking firm India bulls which is now in to retail home loans and personal loans feeding consumerism. This job could be done by a financial expert much better. What is the purpose of their IIT education?

Some one quipped that what Mr.Murthi complained about falling standards of education at IIT is an indirect snub to the reservaton policy. It could be true because IITs have become inclusive followin the introduction of reservations which is resented by high caste lobby. We have an excellent IIT alumni amongst us Union Minister for rural development Jairam Ramesh who has contributed immensely to the shaping of people friendly policies of the UPA II. Not many IITans would like to take up such tasks.

Tell me how many IITans have contributed to national development ? Forget about their clout in silicon valley but actually have they won universal recognition for any meaningful contribution to society? Till such time we have such graduates churned from IITs, the purpose of establishment of such an institute of higherlearnign with value addition to society will be lost.

It is no denying that IITinans have the sharpest brains whether or not they are trained in coaching mandis to gain admission. I do not consider myself brilliant to their level and yet feel that they had traded off their obligaton to society for material benefits. Why is that it never occured to Murthi and his ilks that distance education models could cut down costs of education as has been proved by on line education portals like Shantanus' educomp.solutions? That explains the choice of IIT graduates. They prefer to mint money as quickly as possible- to use a cliche monetise their IP
