IS LEADERSHIP ONLY ABOUT WINNING?

Following the poor performance of the Congress Party beyond anyone's imagination, TV anchors are questioning the leadership qualities of Rahul Gandhi, the  VP of the largest party in the country. They have of late arrogated to themselves the mandate to elect leaders. This media obsession has been there for some time which the former PM,Chandrasekar once  chided in unequivocal terms. Media created leaders like VP Singh who was a disaster in UP having resigned when he failed to keep his promise of arresting Phoolan Devi within a stipulated time. He was a non descript Minister under Late Indira Gandhi was brought to limelight by Rajiv as Finance Minister. This Mir jaffer made a mountain out of mole hill in the Bofors issue and suddenly became cleaner than Mr.Clean. He did not hesitate to seek support from Communal elements in his zest for power. He was dropped like a hot potato once he challenged Rath Yathra with his Mandal challenge. Mandal Commission report implemented without much opposition later on by Rao .

Leaders definitely fight for a win. But their leadership qualities are evaluated in how they conduct themselves in the battle. That is why Alexander admired the fighting qualities of Purushottam alias Porus and gave back his kingdom and sent his emissary Seluqcas Nicadar. The world talks more about Nepolean Bonaparte than about Admiral Nelson who triumphed against him at waterloo. Akabr the Great admired Mewar Rani Padmini for her valor and later on restricted his battle conquests and promoted religious amity. Leaders inspite cadres, soldiers , inculcate a sense of discipline among them and never tread in to treacherous paths for whatever end results promise to be, take up responsibility for victory and defeat alike. They make solemn promises and not which can not be fulfilled.

Judging Rahul by these yardsticks, he had conducted himself with poise, grace and utmost caution unlike Modi who was all shrills and innuendoes about his opponents. Yes his campaigns failed to attract crowds, unlike Modi's whose marketing brigade works overtime to bring in truckloads of followers to his rallies. There is not enough estimate of the cost of his rallies. Even he faced empty grounds in some of the venues. If one judges the popularity of a leader by the crowd that throng to see or hear him, only MGR, NTR could be called leaders. Yes Rahul's campaign did not yield dividends inUP, Bihar and as recently in the 4 states. But study his work over the past few years. He has travelled all along the country to study the problem of the common man, dalits, landless labourers, Adivasis and Tribals. His contribution to themaking of the new Land Acquisition Act is phenomenal. He has fought for people's issues to the best of his ability. He led a team of Industry captains to Kashmir valley promising the youth jobs,. He wanted constitutional status for the proposed Lakpal which even Arvind Kejriwal did not demand in the first place. But Rahul seems to be shy of demanding ackowledgement for his work. Many people believe that he has failed to connect with the youth of India. But I do not agree. May be there are detractors for him in the social media. If popularity amongst social media is a barometer Modi will have a challenger in Sashi Tharoor.

Rahul's speech at CII meet was full of promise and from the bottom of the heart., He confessed that there are no instant solutions to all problems and we need to work together to find solutions.  He said to believe that man on horse back would come and cleanse the system is impractical. He was speaking the truth. If one chooses to ignore this man, then sure he must be afraid of facing the truth.
