LESSONS FROM DELHI

In our sankalp mantra, we used to pay obeisance to seven sacred cities chanting, Ayodhyapuri, Avantikapuri, Hansitanapuri, Mayapuri, Kasipuri, Kanchipuri, Mathurapuri. Mayapuri refers to New Delhi which was full of palace intrigues during the Pandava reign. It has not changed much even now. The rout of Congress Party in the national capital city of Delhi, is something to even the most hardest critic of the party would be shocked to learn. Sheila Dikshit is relatively a clean politician who has had a 15 year track record of transforming Delhi in to an international city, with improved infrastructure and lot of public welfare schemes. While it could be true that people yearned for change for whatever reason, one could also understand BJP getting almost close to a comfortable majority in the Assembly, the performance of Aam Adhmi Party( this name itself is a misnomer for most of their leaders are, by their own signed affidavits crorepatis owning a fleet of imported cars) is staggeringly incredible.

The Residents of Delhi constitute one of the elitist segments of India. There are also poor migrants from UP and Bihar who constituted the vote bank of the Congress party . the merchant class and upper castes were the backbone of BJP support base. AAP is a group of arrogant, educated rogues save one Yogendra Yadav who is very modest even in expressing his anguish at the present state of politics. For One Modi in BJP who is an epitome of arrogance, we have multiple Chauhans, RamanSinghs, Advanis, UmaBharatis who are humble to the core. For a couple of Kapil Sibals and  Tiwaris, Digvijay Singhs, we have Chidambarams( his occasional intellectual arrogance not withstanding,) Rahul Gandhi Manmohan Singh etc in the congress party who are not vain boasting. In AAP , almost every leader is self righteous with contempt for fellow politicians of all variety. I am not sure if the Delhi citizen wanted such a group of people to be elected to rule and deliver results.

There are lessons to be learnt for the Congress party from this serious drubbing. For too long Indian National Congress has been identified with pro poor policies, secular credentials until one modern day Chanakya sought to depart from the established path of socialist ideals. The original VikasPurush is undoubtedly Narasimha Rao who opened up the window of opportunities for Indian industry. He wanted to be remembered as a development PM. It was he who has authored the India growth story which has been claimed to be NDA policy and unfairly attributed to Manmohan Singh. Congress party should have claimed the legacy of Narasimha Rao who had infact drawn undecided neutral voters to the party fold. Because he was from outside the first family, his contribution was ignored.

PM and his buddies favored a policy which benefected urban India while rural flagship programmes were curtailed in the name of containing fiscal deficit., PM even resisted attempts to pay minimum wages under MNREGA. Sonia Gandhi wanted to provide housing for the migrant population in the capital which was not favored by PM and his team of advisors. If Delhi government has spent monies on the basic amenities to migrant population instead of providing flyovers, Metrorail, CNG buses, low floor and AC buses for the elitist Delhi citizen, Congress party would not have been defeated as badly as of now. Regularisation of illegal colonies was criticised by elistist class in the media- both visual and print. They were pro poor policy. Even SC ordered demolitions for roadside vendors who occupied free walking spaces of the elitist. Right to livelihood was ignored at the highest altar of judiciary.

Congress should seriously introspect and take a course correction before it is too late. Ignoring the rural India and succumbing to demands of the urban middle class will be disastrous. It is not my stand that legitimate aspirations and demands of every citizen should not be addressed. But they must prioritized. They should not be dejected and carry on the battle for the voiceless, underprivileged and socially backward. Rahul who is now being ridiculed for his valiant attempts to inculcate a sense of duty to fellow congresmen should carry on his fight against political upstarts and communal elements. If the urban middle class chose to ignore him and his party, so be it. After all they alone are not in a position to call all the shots. One swallow they say does not make a summer. It is not the time to get fear of defeat. Loksabha elections are due 6 months away. That could be a different story if Rahul chooses to.
