    The painstaking efforts of a band of dedicated supporters, pouring of millions of money in to making a messiah out of an ordinary politician with ordinary record has paid of handsomely with the ruling Congress party getting reduced a paltry 40 odd seats in the Lok sabha even worse than in 1977. I never thought Modi marketing could be this much successful despite the fact it brought in jitters to old congress men who were running for cover to escape from a looming defeat. The Gujarat success story which has been appropriated by Modi and his men is infact contributed by succeesive Chief Ministers of theState and the inherent hardwork of aGujarati businessman. Gujarat story was built up a case study in the aftermath of 2002 riots which has left a blot on the state as a PR exercise outsourced to a Multinatinal marketing firm for a heavy price. NDTV's Sreenivasan Jain in his episode brought forth the twisting of facts to promote Modi the man through technology. But the Media had already made him a hero. It was too late to educate the gullible. What caused this drubbing is the spineless reaction by the ruling dispensation when Modi was declared the challenger. They refused to acknowledge him a threat as a man of no consequence. Only Jairam Ramesh acknowledged that he posed an ideological challenge for which he was reprimanded. But when Sonia and her Son realised that infact he is a challenger, much damage had already been done. Even the late entry of more charismatic Priyanka could only save Amethi and Raebareli and couldnot stop the slide.

    What are the lessons learnt and what are the reconcilatory efforts the party needs to take now?

    For the first time as Modi claimed, the hold of Nehru Gandhi family over the party is under threat. Media claims that Congress need to groom leaders from outside the family. They forget that only this family allowed Narasimha Rao to run a full term and gave it on a platter to the Sardar who was never loyal to the party or its leadership.Because of him, the party lost supporters from the Left and Mamta walked out of the UPA.If as Media claims Sonia was wielding all the power, she could just have asked MMS to leave. That she did not speaks the enormous respect she had for this man. This man never spoke for the party and his Government and was always worred about himself. People say Rahul staying away from the dinner his mother hosted for this man is an insult to him. till now MMS hasnot acknowledged his responsibility in the serious drubbing. He wants the world to believe that he is innocent and powerless as people like Jaitely want us to believe while Sonia and her son were running the government. This was far from the truth. MMS vetoed every social intended policy decision putforward by NAC even challenged the High court order for paying minimum wages underMNREGS.You can ask Aruna roy for the details.MMS shunted out Jairam Ramesh and Jayanthi Natarajan due to intense lobbying by the industry while defended Bhansal and Aswini Kumar who were to go because Sonia was adamant. MMS has been the single most factor in the drubbing of the party because he alienated the traditional vote banks of the party forever not ever to return. If Rao alienated muslims in UPby his tacit acquisence of Babri Masjid demolition, this man created a constituency of his own and annoyed a larger sectionof the population amonst the under privileged and powerless.

    One should congratulate Modi and his marketing team for their sustained focus on an individual and intense campaigning. Modi has proved that personality cult could be rewarding as much.
