THESE HONOURABLE MEN
Almost in every television debate whether it is in NDTV, times now,CNN IBN or in News Today, high profile lawyers like Harish Salve, Mahesh Jethmalani, KTS Tulsi, participate in matters of probity in public life, corruption in high places etc and wax eloquent about high morals and accountability in Public life. I have been wondering to as to how our country has been blessed with such highly motivated moral brigade and thought they will set examples. To my dismay I find these lawyers arguing cases for corporate houses, who have been charged with defrauding the nation by not less a person than CAG, the new found messiah of the urban neo rich. Harish Salve argues cases for Tata in the infamous Radiia tape episode. He argues cases for Tamil Nadu CM. Mahesh Jethmalani's father appears for a godman accused of rape arguing that the girl has a nympomaniac and gets away with this slander.
Jethmalani Sr. produced a signed affidavit before the press displaying a suitcase containing one crore Rupees alleging that his client Late Harshad Mehta paid this to then Prime Minister Narasimha Rao. An affidavit is a legal document and any wrong statement brings the signatory to the charge of perjury for which a President was almost impeached in USA. Jethamalani neither apologised for his conduct nor did he prove his charge. the Bar Council is a mute spectator to the falling standards amongst its fraternity. One remembers late NT Vanamamali refusing to entertain request to appear for the present CM of Tamil Nadu when the perception was that she was corrupt. Those standards are now gone.
