    • WHY KALAM IS NOT THE RIGHT CANDIDATE?
    There can not be two opinions about the stature of former President APJ Abdul Kalam as a distinguished public servant while he was in office, as an intellectual President on the lines of Dr.Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan , as some one who is responsible for our Country to be counted among the nations possessing missile power, as a People friendly President unlike most of his predecessors and the list goes on and on. I personally rate him as one of the finest human beings who put the nation ahead of anything. His dream of India becoming a super power by 2020 by concerted actions detailed in the form of a stupendously researched book along with his colleague in DRDO Dr.Y.S.Rajan is some thing remarkable that will instil a sense of confidence in every indian reading the book. He was brought in as a candidate for Presidency during Vajpayee's NDA regime, fresh from the memories of Pokhran II - Pakistan repeated pokhran the following day is something best ignored in the interests of national pride on the basis of consensus. It suited the ruling dispensation led by a party perceived to be communal for Dr Kalam by faith is a Muslim. This time around his name is cropping up as a candidate to challege whomsoever UPA decides to nominate to fight a purely political battle. Mercurial Mamta and Mulayam who last time pulled the rug from under Sonia's feet at the behest of fellow socialist of yesteryears- George Fernandez have proposed him to be nominated alongwith Dr.Manmohan Singh and Somnath Chatterjee to get didi  rid of the tag of being anti Bengal if UPA were to insist on Pranab. 

    Dr.Kalam endeared himself to the masses of India especially the youth and Children communicating with them effectively with his pet themes of a powerful and resurgent India. His PURA is perhaps the mos ideal solution to the large scale urbanisation of India with attendant problems. He had his moments of criticisms too. It was whispered in some circles that he disssuaded Sonia Gandhi from seeking claim to be Prime Minister citing non existent constitutional provisions barring people of dual citizenship from holding constitutional posts. IF Sonia could be Member of Parliament, leader of the opposition why not the Prime Minister? Constitution provides for the President to appoint those elected as theleader of the party or alliance holding majority in the Lok Sabha as the Prime Minister. Nothing more and nothing less. But the whipser remains and probably it is believed Sonia is not favorable to his candidacy because of this.

    Dr.Kalam then did the unthinkable for such a man of high and unimpeachable integrity and wisdom. He entertained kith and kin of the convicted Afsal Guru - sentenced to death by SC in the sensational Parliament attack case. Dr.Kalam had decided on the mercy petition of Dhananjay the child rapist and killer  in a matter of days but chose to sit on Afsal's petition. By giving an unprecendented audience to the convicts kith and kin, Dr. Kalam sent a wrong message and an affront to the gallantry exhibited by those brave policemen who guarded our Parliament and laid their lives. Those families returned the Presidential decorations as a mark of protest but Dr.Kalam was not repentant for what he did. Surprising that the Sangh Parivat who day and in day out take patent on national honor and patriotism this time toys with the idea of putting up Dr.Kalam against UPA nominee. If Dr.Kalam were to accept this, he will get his image sullied beyond redemption. I am sure wiser counsels will prevail
