GLOBAL WARMING

I happened to read an interesting article in The Hindu on the arm twisting tactics employed by the West and particularly the United states in the matter of steps to be taken by developing nations on the need to bring down GHG emissions and to ensure that rise in temperature does not exceed 2 degree C. The global convention held in Italy has created a sense of euphoria with the developed world requiring the developing world to compromise on its development initiatives through compulsory reduction of carbon emissions. It is in this context, the push to switch over to supposedly greener Nuclear energy has been gathering momentum. We as a developing nation and part of the BRIC economies are required not to use coal as fuel for generating power even though we have abundant coal reserves. Using coal need not be so polluting because forceful afforestation of the generating station could offset the CO2 emissions considerably. We can switch over to Combined cycle plants where flue gas is used to drive a gas turbine as well besides the conventional steam turbine that the coal fed boiler activates. The Carbon emissions are captured and passed on to deep pits separated miles apart. Global warming practices are directed against developing economies stifling their growth. The unfair practices of the western world more specifically US should be resisted.
