Harvest Festivals

Most of our festivals are interwined to harvests like Pongal ,Sankaranthi, Onam and Baisaki which are festivals celebrated by farming community over a bumper harvest. Onam is one such festival which has cultural links with our vedic tradition and past. It is said Maveli, the demon King who was sent to Pathallok by Lord Mahavishnu in his Vaman Avatar emerges from his pathallok to visit his subjects and find they are happy These are the days of Thiruvonam the harvest festival of Kerala celebrated across the various religions and communities inKerala.

Legend has it that Maharaja Yudhistrar after the epic Kurukshetra war ascended to the throne after performing Rajasuya Yaga. One of the rituals associated with this Yaga is feeding of brahmins and adoring them with gifts. Maharaja Yudhistra usually a man of high intellect, modesty and integrity felt a little elated over this enormous success of his yaga and developed a sense of pride. Krishna could sense the pride and wanted to teach Yudhistra a proper lesson. He then led him to one of his ancestor King Mahabali( Maveli- Son of Parikshit Maharaj and grand son of Prahalad). Maharaja Yudhistra was introduced to Mahabali as the King who beat enemies in a big epic battle andascended to the throne- which was justifiably his and performed Rajasuya Yag. Yudhistrar narrated to Mahabali how he fed thousand and thousands of poor brahmins. Maveli was astounded at his pride. He asked him whether he takes pride inleading a country where there are poor people craving to have lunch free? This one question brought the vanity in Maharaj Yudhistrar's belief and he bowed before Maveli.. There is a lesson for our modern day Maharajas who take pride in our country becoming a world economic power when half of the population lack basic civic ameneties and die of hunger. May be this time around,Maveli when he comes during Thiruvonam will inculcate a sense of civic responsibility to our rulers who have become arrogant
