POWER BROKERS

When Rajiv Gandhi talked of abolishing power brokers within the Congress party at the centenerary celebrations, every one was relieved because at the time of Indira Gandhi certain vested interests such as RK Dhawan who had only their proximity to the power centre as their qualifications could influence political decisions at thier will yes ofcourse for a price. These brokers acted as a conduit between the power centres and the intended beneficiaries. That is how Reliance came to be known as a party close to power centres. The late Ambani had willing Banks to open pre dated letters of credit to escape newer customs notifications which sought to restrict import of PTA the alternate raw material to DMT.

During the time of PVN, the power brokers nexus continued with newer players like late Jitendra Prasada creating a parallel power centre with PMO in the lime light. Vajpayee created another layer of power in the name of NSA when Brajessh Mishra could be more powerful than the MEA.

I have great regards for the political acumen of Pranab and felt the party insulted him when he was not nominated acting PM when the PM was recuperating from a surgery. But Pranab as FM can not be a right choice when whispers were there earlier about his alleged proximity to business houses, espcially Reliance Already another Reliance sympathiser Murli Deora has been handed out Petroleum portfolio, handing over Finance Ministry to Pranab sends wrong signals.Amabani brothers could exert enormous pressures on the policies of the government. It was murmered that as a quid pro quo for SP support during the confidence motion, Reliance was handed over mandate to manage EPF corpus. The obvious clash of interests, conflict of interests was ignored and even regulatory bodies maintained silence.

Rahul the new found youth icon and Mr clean of Congress party could do well to find a better candidate for the post of FM. Why not try Dr. Rangarajan the PM's first choice last time?
