THE DECLARATION
There was an uproar in Parliament over the declaration signed by PrimeMinisters of India and Pakistan in Egypt. BJP and some opposition parties feel that we have diluted our stand by accepting a reference to Baluchistan unrest which Pakistan claims to have been continually fanned by Indian intelligence. It also feels that delinking the cross border terrorism from bilateral talks has also diluted our stand. The Prime Minister and his advisors claim that the PM has succeeded in his attempt to draw the world attention to cross border terrorism. Because a battered BJP alone voices its concern, this matter has been taken lightly by the media as well with some of them toeing the official line. the crux of the matter is that Pakistan PM, Gilani has come out triumphtantly by making India agree to delink terror issues and also to offer assistance to Pakistan in fighting terror. Earlier also Dr.Singh concurred with the view that Pakistan is as much a victim of terror as India is whereas Pakistan has been engaging terror as an act of state policy_ Dr. Singh himself opined so some time back. This shows that our neighbour has outsmarted our touted bureaucracy with adroit moves. After 6 months of Mumbai terror attacks, after exchange of so muchof information, Pakistan is yet to start proceedings against the accused in the terror attack. Their Supreme Court says that UNSC Directive is not a reason for arresting JuM leadership and questions whether India acceded to UNSC resolution of Plebiscite. Still there are journalists who want peace talks between neighbours. Gilani feels that India is definitely a threat and not a friendly neighbour as his President Zardari felt. Gilani wants to curb Presidential powers citing the supremacy of Parliament. If tomorow, one holds a plebicite in Pakistan, Gilani will win more votes than Zardari because an average Pakistani still feels slighted by India's economic growth. No matter Dr. Singh made references to Mumbai terror attacks when he met zardari at Moscow impromptu, Dr.Singh was silent when he met Gilani. This proves how effective a foreign policy administration that Dr.Singh has bequeated to our Country. the faux pass in the declaration may cost us dearly in the long run.
