THEY CAME, THEY SAW , THEY CONQUERED

I was one amongt the many sceptics who believed that the Obama visit will not bring in any tangible benefits to our nation. It is also true that Obama needs us more than our needing Obama due to his domestic compulsions. right from the day when Airforce one landed on the tarmac of Chatrapati Shivaji International airport, criticims were levelled in a section of the media about his soft pedalling the issue of complicity of Pakistan in terror related activities The President however set this to rest in his address to our Parliament. BJP saw the visit as a bail out package for Obama. Obama' s negotiators for sale of military hardware had attached conditionalities which other countries hardly ever insist. It was calling India to be short of a client state of USA. There were lobbies to water down the provisions of nuclear liability Act and silence on justice to victims of Bhopal gas disaster.

What inspired me most was the simplicity and humility of the President and First Lady in getting connected with people of humble origins whether in College, schools or in the Humayun's Tomb where the President knelt down to talk to a child of the underprivileged. the first couple delivered special gifts and left an indeible impression on those young children. Michelle Obama could probably the only first lady in a long time to have expressed her concern for the poor, underprivileged, on the empowerment of women. None of our netas would ever exhibit humanism except perhaps Rahul Gandhi who recently travelled with common men in the sleeper compartment and her Mother Sonia Gandhi. No certainly not our erudite Prime Minister who blocked the universal PDS through his cronies.

I salute the Obamas for their humility, simplicity and humane qualities. Certainly they are a rare species
