India Needs Responsible Leaders

Freelance Journalist
In all the election posters of Congress party in the Delhi Assembly polls this month, the faces of the Congress party were Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.  But, when they drew a blank in the results, it was Ajay Makhan who owned up responsibility.

Similarly, the face of the BJP in the Delhi Assembly polls were Narendra Modi and Amit Shah.  They were all over the city on the posters, banners and what have you.  But, when it came to owning up responsibility of their debacle in the Delhi elections, they wanted to make Kiran Bedi their scapegoat.  But, she was not one to take the blame.  She claimed that she had won though the people of her constituency rejected her.  When asked to explain the BJP debacle in Delhi, she said: “I have not lost.  The BJP has lost.  Ask them.” This blame game can go on among Modi, Amit and Kiran.  But, the people of India are not interested in it.

In all these, Arvind Kejriwal was different in his approach.  He owned up responsibility for whatever happened during the last adventure in forming the Delhi Government and offered an unconditional apology.  This is the sign of a responsible leader. That is why Delhi voted him to power with an unprecedented majority.

Will the Congress, BJP and other political parties learn from this? India needs leaders who lead from the front and shoulder responsibility for the results of their actions and inactions.  India does not need leaders who lead from the back.
