What To Do In The Present Scenario
Whatever happened in Mumbai is deplorable. We are all angry and frustrated.
We all want action!
Though we are all confused but there are suggestions ....in fact a wide range of suggestions
coming from every thinking person of the country. While on one hand we want to punish the
politicians, on the other hand we want the state to declare a war on Pakistan. While some want
to stop paying the taxes, others want the military to take over. The government, as usual,
ill prepared to tackle any difficult situation, has started buckling under public pressure. Not
only do they lack any concrete plan to tackle such calamities physically, they do not have any
cohesive and comprehensive action plan to deal even with the aftermath of such calamities.
No policy, no solution, and no accepting the responsibility. Usual bickering and playing politics
even in situation as grave as the present one. In order to calm the general rhetoric, all they could do
was to remove a few ministers from their posts. This is as shameful as the act of terrorism itself.
The easiest thing to do is to resign! Do we as individuals resign when our own house is burning? Instead of owning the responsibility and working overtime these politicians coolly take some time off to rest and then re emerge
on the political scene after some time. And if they are unable to handle the situation then they need to be impeached or
face court martial. They need to be punished for failing at such a critical moment.
However, all this has already been said. What I mean to say here is something else. In all this anger, frustration and confusion, we have forgotten one word - EMERGENCY!
It is a national emergency and the government needs to declare a state of emergency. The center needs to assume
complete control, give strict instructions to all the states to pull up their security apparatus since policing is a
state issue and any state failing to do so be immediately put under president's rule; and above all, put a curb on
the ever damaging media. The hysterical anchors of private media channels and irresponsible photo coverage, inciting public sentiments and drawing their own silly conclusions needs to be checked right away.
One does need to be an Indira Gandhi to declare a state of emergency. There are clear provisions in the constitution
for the same and any head of the government, howsoever docile and timid he/she may be, can exercise these powers in
unusual situations.
Before talking of war, we need to put our own house in order. Every time there is a fire in our house, we don't start blaming the neighbour who keeps a matchbox in his house. We have to keep ourselves safe and insulated.
As they say, tough situations need tough actions. This is the time to take some tough measures and for long term, we need to take some corrective measures which include strict rules and regulations for becoming a politician which include
a comprehensive CAT or IAS kind of test, a short military or civil defence training and an oath of accountability - to name a few.
