Chennai: A Cultural Medley

Chief Organiser
Located along the Coromandel Coast, Chennai is one of the South India’s most culturally rich cities. Formally known as Madras, the city got its name from the famous Portuguese Church built for Mother Mary "Madre De Deus" (The Mother of God) and dedicated to St. Thomas (Madre De Deus was anglicised to "Madras" by the British). In 1996 Madras was renamed Chennai.

People from this southern state are considered to be good in the fields of Mathematics and Sciences, but the place has also given some great athletes. Some of the famous gems of the city include Chess Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand, Cricketer Krishnamachari Srikkanth, Oscar-winning Musical Maestro A. R. Rahman, Nobel Laurette CV Raman, the Chairman of Pepsi Co -  Indra Nooyi, among many other eminent personalities.

One of the fastest growing cities in the country, Chennai is the Detroit of India and houses one of the top 10 automobile hubs in the world, and has the capacity to produce about 1.4 million cars a year, and three cars every minute. This distinction has attracted many automobile experts from across the globe. In fact, Chennai has the third largest expatriate population in India after Mumbai and Delhi.

But, the humid weather in the city can completely drain you out, and finding your ways in the city with broken Tamil language could be an altogether different challenge. But, apart from the scorching heat and gaudy traffic, Chennai is also a cultural boiling pot – where modern meets traditional, the devout meets the diverse, and the God fearing meets the hero worshiper. Once you fall into the rhythm, it is hard not to skip a beat.

For someone new to the city, Chennai has some great neighborhoods and can cater to the diverse needs of your pocket. So, if you are living on a shoe-string budget, affordable residential flats could meet your needs. But if a lavish, spacious house is what you’re looking for, many independent villas in Chennai could make your stay in the coastal city a breezy experience.

If you have a taste for high life and budget is not a constraint, Poses Garden in the heart of the city is a prime residential locality. The place houses some of the Chennai’s most iconic personalities. The Tamil film superstar Rajnikanth Aka Thalaivaa along with the late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Ms. J. Jayalalitha has sprawling independent villas in this high-end neighborhood of Chennai.

ECR road /East-Coast Road: This neighborhood is built along the Bay of Bengal, and houses many sea-facing luxury apartments and independent villas of Chennai. It also has many entertainment hubs.

One of the oldest residential localities, Nugumbakam has many government offices and educational institutions. It is a top residential choice among many ‘Chennaites’.  There are many residential options available in this suburban area - from gated communities, apartments to independent bungalows.

Home to the growing IT sector, Velachery has been a preferred choice among the young IT professionals. Buying a property in this upcoming neighborhood ensures a great return on investment.

Fast becoming a favorite among prospective home buyers, Madiapakkam’s proximity to Velachery is a great attraction. The area has adequate amenities for families who wish to reside in this neighborhood.  It is considered one of the most lucrative investment options for this year.

Chennai is a fast growing real estate hot spot with the burgeoning infrastructure. The city is evolving every day and is far more welcoming to the migrants now. Enjoy the city for its hot filter coffee, magnificent coastline, huge and glorious temples, beautiful Kanjeevaram sarees and lip smacking South Indian delicacies. But, the one thing you must refrain from is - you never call a local Madarasi, as it is downright offensive thing to generalize in Chennai.
