Us & the poor Swine with the flu
The 1918 flu pandemic in humans was associated with H1N1 and influenza appearing in pigs; this may reflect a zoonosis either from swine to humans, or from humans to swine. Although it is not certain in which direction the virus was transferred, some evidence suggests that, in this case, pigs caught the disease from humans. (pity those pigs)
For instance, swine influenza was only noted as a new disease of pigs in 1918, after the first large outbreaks of influenza amongst people. Swine influenza virus is common throughout pig populations worldwide. Transmission of the virus from pigs to humans is not common and does not always lead to human influenza, often resulting only in the production of antibodies in the blood. If transmission does cause human influenza, it is called zoonotic swine flu. People with regular exposure to pigs are at increased risk of swine flu infection.
How are we dealing with it. We are Closing malls, cinema halls checking at airports nothing wrong with it (these are people in socio economic seg sec b to a), while the masses in India live with open and mostly overflowing drains and have pigs for companions, our sewer lines and water supply pipes share peremability and osmosis. They travel by trains, buses and other affordable means difficult to do much or effect anything there so that is not our focus.
hey, whatever happened to our senses and sensibilities, mumbai hasnt learnt to deal with rains, north India has learnt nothing on rain water harvesting isint it a time to review our methods to capture eyeballs, soundbytes, opinion makers for they havent moved beyond fulfilling their revenue goals.
Despite the most dramatic reports, features, coverage, interviews in print or audio visual medium havent caused even a "blip" of a movement.
I wonder if yet we will let one more year of our Independence get past us with open overflowing drains and the general mess surrounding and enveloping all that we do? Have we not moved to living and loving, promoting a "pig's life"?
