Leaders attract and retain talent

Head Corp Com Mastek
Mahatma Gandhi had nothing to give but attracted millions to fight for our country’s freedom. Mother Teresa attracted people from all around the world to work for the poorest of the poor. Similarly in corporate India Narayan Murthy attracted a team that gave up plush jobs to found Infosys.

Leaders have a knack of connecting with people, they understand what motivates individuals and they have an ability to inspire teams to a vision. Instinctively good leaders are good communicators and are able to enroll people to their vision. One of the most important characteristics I have found in leaders who attract people is integrity to their value system, they walk the talk.

Leaders groom and create space for many more leaders within the organization and it is this leadership that is critical in building the Employer Brand. Unfortunately it is here that many times leadership fails – not building a team of leaders who hold the similar value system and have integrity and are passionate about the vision.

When I look back at my own career and the time I have spent at Mastek and ask the question what makes me stick to this institution the answer is its leaders. Having worked closely with the founders of Mastek I have been struck by their humbleness and respect for people, also by their integrity to common values. Interestingly Mastek is like almost like a cult brand, those who have experienced the space are changed in some way. There is a phrase coined by an ex-Mastekeer “Once a Mastekeer, Always a Mastekeer.”

Organization values and culture flow right from the top and it is this glue that binds people – it is the leadership that builds powerful Employer Brands that attract and retain talent.
