A few years back Ratan Tata made a promise that he would deliver a car that would cater to the middle class families in India that used a two wheeler for transport , a car that would be affordable and have all the features of a car . At a Press conference he was asked by a journalist whether this car would be within Rs 1 lakh and he responded with a yes . At that time India was not known for its manufacturing capabilities, let alone design a workable car that would set a global benchmark of being the cheapest!

Five years later at the launch of the car Ratan Tata was asked why Rs 1 lakh and his answer was “a promise is a promise” . That defines one of the most trusted brands of India the TATA group and the personal brand of Ratan TATA . Power brands make a promise that they keep , they go beyond the promise , the Nano is not just a autorikshaw that a few said it would be , it is a design marvel that has become a global aspiration.

Since that time the cost of raw materials used jumped up multiple times , there could be so many excuses to jump the price but Ratan Tata understands the integrity of a personal brand . How many of us make a promise to our friends , to our colleagues , to our organizations , to our family and to our nation that we do not keep . Each promise breached damages our personal brand equity . How many of the promises we make to ourselves that we keep? every time we break a promise it diminishes us in some way.
