Brij Agarwal's Story

Job Profile:
Joined BHEL. Upto AGM, main responsibility was design and development of electrics for Locomotives & Electric Trains. As GM, looked after engineering, manufacturing, marketing of some products, of almost one fourth output of Bhopal Unit. After superannuation from BHEL, engineering consultancy.
The Decisions That Matter
Joining BHEL over MP Electricity Board. Design work during initial period of career. Opting for IIT Kharagpur for PG Studies, by taking study leave, which ultimately proved highly beneficial. Becoming Chairman of BHEL Education Society, implementing computer eduction in schools - first at Bhopal.
Career Profile:
Present responsibilities are on engineering consultancy to some industries, for solving their technical problems, and helping them on development of new products.
Working Life Management:
Spend time in reading books and magazines to upgrade knowledge. Fond of seeing DVDs of english movies, listening to music, sports, football, meeting friends. Active participation in social sites and e-mailing. Recently organised Get Together of my Engineering Batch, almost after 50 years.
Done Differently:
After my Matriculation, I wanted to join medical subjects in I.Sc. But none of my friends opted for it, therefore I also selected engineering subjects. If given a chance again, would like to become a medical doctor.
Plans For The Future:
In couple of years, my consultancy work may discontinue. However, I wish to remain active in social & friends circle.
Prized Accomplishment(s):
New design & test methods, and computerisation. Dev of new products, particularly traction machines for country's first Metro Rly Project, Kolkata. As GM streamlined production of products, which were earlier bottlenecks. Help to engineering industry by way of consultancy.
Changes In The Professional Environment:
In our time we were more concerned about our duties and organisation. I find present generation to be more bothered about personal rise, rather than the organisation. Discipline, ethics, dedication & loyalty to work, are in shambles, particularly in our country.
Other Thoughts:
Was senior most GM at BHEL Bhopal Unit - number of times looked after UNIT in lieu of ED. Got honour to raise National Flag at BHEL Bhopal Unit on 15th August. Happy that my career was blameless, was well liked in the rank 881984 file of the company. Superannuated as one of the popular officers of BHEL.
Role Model:
Swami Vivekanand, right from my school days. He helped in reviving interest of the world in our ancient culture and religion. He always preached for discipline, sincerity, hard work, loyalty, dedication, and above all for us to become better human beings.
