Boot Camp Partition Errors and Data Loss in Mac OS X

Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard include Boot Camp utility, which enables you to install Windows 7 operating system on same machine. It configures your system a dual-boot environment and you can take advantages of both Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X operating systems. However, in some situations, you may face a number of problems while installing Windows operating systems. Some of the issues require hard drive formatting to be fixed and enable you to install Windows operating system. It leads to serious data loss and requires Mac Recovery to be fixed, if there is no backup in place.

As an practical example of this problem, you may come across the below error message while installing Microsoft Windows 7 on your iMac using Boot Camp utility:

“Create a Partition for Windows
Each operating system requires its own partition on the disk.
Drag the divider to set the size of the partitions, or click one of the buttons.”

The above error occurs even if you have plenty of free disk space on Windows partition. You see two buttons on the error message dialog box, namely- Divide Equally or Use 32 GB. You can select any one among them to create partition.

When you click the Partition button after selecting appropriate partitioning option, you get further error message stating:

“The disk cannot be partition because some files cannot be moved.
Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again.”

Cause

1) You may face this behavior due to either of the below reasons:

2) Heavy file fragmentation on the hard drive and Boot Camp is not getting contiguous free space to create partition.

3) The disk is damaged.

Resolution

As suggested in the above error message, you can solve this issue and perform File Recovery Mac by formatting the hard drive. However, it removes all your mission critical data from the Mac OS X hard drive and causes severe data loss.

In such cases, Mac Recovery Software come for your rescue. The applications deploy powerful scanning techniques to methodically scan the Mac OS X drive and extract all lost data from it. Mac File Recovery is pretty easy and safe with these utilities.

Stellar Phoenix Macintosh Data Recovery software recovers lost Mac data from hard drive, USB drive, FireWire drive, memory card, and iPod in all data loss situations. The software is compatible with Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, 10.5 Leopard, 10.4 Tiger, and 10.3.9 Panther. It retrieves data from HFS, HFS+, HFSX, HFS Wrapper, and FAT file system volumes.
