Revenue up 23%, Intel Looks to Reverse the Trend in 2011

Intel revenue is expected to increase 23 percent, reaching $49.7 billion from semiconductors in 2011, compared to $40.4 billion in 2010, according to IHS iSuppli market report.

In this way, Intel will garner 15.9 percent market share, a growth of 13.2 percent from last year. Moreover, the chipmaker will increase its lead over second-ranked Samsung by 6.5 percentage points.

Intel gets most of its semiconductor revenue from selling microprocessors (MPU) and NAND flash memory. These two are set to increase between 15 and 20% this year. Intel's acquisition of Infineon Technologies also helped boost its revenues.

At the same time, Samsung's revenue is estimate to rise 3% this year amid weakness in the DRAMmarket, as well as other memory segments. Other chip makers that benefited from acquisitions were Texas Instruments Inc., which raised one level to take third place and Qualcomm Inc., which is jumping three levels to No. 6. ON Semiconductor Corp. is likely to make the biggest leap, up seven levels to No. 19.

Samsung benefits from the growth of NAND memory segment in 2011. The company also posts strong sales growth in other product lines like mobile applications processors, CMOS image sensors and display drivers. But it loses out on the DRAM segment which may see drop of 27 percent in total market revenue expected this year.

Texas Instruments also benefitted from the acquisition of National Semiconductor in 2011, which helped it to unseat Japan's Toshiba as the world's third-largest chip supplier. Its revenue is set to grow by 8.4 percent for the year.

Qualcomm is looking to its semiconductor revenue increase by 39.9 percent in 2011, contributed by its acquisition of Atheros Communications.

ON Semiconductor will be the largest beneficiary in this space with a growth of almost 50 percent. With the acquisition of Sanyo Semiconductor from Panasonic, ON is going to grow further.

Respectively, Hynix Semiconductor, Micron Technology and Elpida Memory will see their revenues fall by 14.2 percent, 17.3 percent, and 40.2 percent.

Generally speaking, the ranking of global semiconductor industry will be reshuffled.
