Aeronautical Engineering Course or Aerospace Engineering Course
Aeronautical Engineering is a specialized and improved branch of mechanical engineering. It entails learning about design and construction of airplanes, aircraft and spacecrafts. The candidate needs to have a good knowledge about basic mathematics and physics in order to study this course because a lot of fundamental principles from physics and mathematics are extensively applied in flight technology.
On a more practical approach, you cannot go and visit all top Aerospace labs in the world and get exposed to all the space shuttles when you are pursuing B. Tech (bachelor degree in engineering) or M. Tech (master degree in engineering) courses. Through this course, you will get to learn the basic principles of flight engineering with few individual experiments. For instance, you may have a lab to experiment vibration, propulsion and thermodynamics, you will test them individually but not in an aircraft.
Job opportunities are rare in the field of Aeronautical Engineering. So, most of the time, students prefer to either move to software companies or plan to study further like get a master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering. If your aim is to work for NASA, you need to be extremely talented, lucky, patient and persistent.
Candidates with an Aerospace Engineering degree can be offered jobs in some of these companies such as Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), Hindustan Aeronautics Limited etc. Some other private companies like Boeing, GE etc. also offer jobs to candidates with an Aerospace Engineering degree. However, finding a job in core Aerospace Engineering is not easy.
The institutes which offer Aerospace Engineering degrees are Indian Institute of Science (IISc); almost all IITs (Indian Institute of Technology); Hindustan Institute of Engineering Technology, Chennai; Indian Institute of Aeronautical Engineering, Dehradun; and Academy of Aerospace and Aviation, Indore.
