Hike in fee for professional courses, Ahmedabad

The new fee structure for 429 professional colleges has been declared by the fee regulatory committee for professional colleges. The hike in fees is in a range of 15-40 per cent.

The fee regulatory committee has also declared the fee structure for the next three academic years. These changes in the fee structure will be applicable in self-financed colleges which provides degree and diploma courses in engineering and pharmacy; master's degrees in business administration, computer applications, engineering, pharmacy; and bachelor's degrees in architecture and hotel and tourism management.

A student enrolled in the year 2011-12 will pay the same fee for the entire course duration even if the fee hike for the next three years has been proposed. For instance, the fee fixed for Nirma Institute of Technology for the year 2011-12 is Rs. 73,000. If a student enrolls there in the same year for the BE course, he would pay Rs. 73,000 per annum for the entire tenure of his course.

According to an official of the fee regulatory committee, each of the colleges was evaluated on 24 different parameters. They were graded in five different categories ranging from excellent to poor before deciding the fees. The fee declared by the committee included tuition, library, laboratory, and computer and even caution money. The colleges will not be allowed to charge any other fee under any head, if they are found to do so, action will be taken up against the college.

The fee structure for the 25 colleges, who have filed litigations, is yet to be declared by the committee. The committee officials say that for an engineering degree course, the fee structure will be between Rs. 42,000 to 1.20 lakh. The existing structure was Rs. 28,000 to 1.20 lakh. Every year, there will be an increase of about Rs. 3,000 to Rs. 5000 per annum in the fees applicable for the next three academic years.
