Engineering: the most popular course in India
The Confederation of Indian Industry confirmed that Engineering is the most popular course in India. This was based on reports which claimed that the existing scenario in the higher and technical education sector in Goa, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, the maximum private spending is received by engineering courses. Out of the total private investment of Rs. 30,407 crores, the investment in engineering courses came to Rs. 9,838 crores in 2010. And it has been seen that Maharashtra comes first on the list in terms of the numbers of institutes and enrollment.
According to the report, it states that, “growth trends for institutes show that maximum growth has taken place in the case of engineering institutes, indicating a strong social preference.” After engineering, the second most preferred course in India is in the faculty of arts, science and commerce with about Rs. 5,366 crores.
With the increase in the number of private institutes, there has been major concern over the quality of education imparted in these institutes. This is mainly because the quality of the institutes are not standardized and this has given rise to poor quality education system in most institutes. In India, there are only some few institutes of good quality. There is a disparity between growth in institutes and in faculty resulting in poor quality of education imparted.
