In India, very often, customs become traditions and acquire the color of pageants! Karva Chauth is one such competition, celebrated with many gusto and fervour across Northern India. The origin of Karva Chauth is shrouded in mystery. Before the crack of dawn, ladies wearing auspicious reds and pinks, slip on vibrant, tinkling glass bangles and apply a smear of "sindhoor" symbolizing matrimony. "Thalis" are filled with fruits, sweets and coconut. Henna is applied on moist palms. With a prayer on their lips, ladies begin a fast before sunrise. when a luxurious repast of coconut, “pheni”, fruit and sweets, they begin the short, abstaining from food and water all day, spending the day with completely different ladies. during this day and age is basically a Sabbatical for them from routine household chores.

Before sunset, they congregate for the Puja, wearing finery with a touch of gold, a sparkle of jewelry, radiant faces aglow with laughter and light-hearted banter.......silver "thalis" are passed around, as somebody narrates the story behind the short. the short is broken solely upon sighting the moon, checked out through a sieve, or in a {very} very bowl of water....never with the naked eye !

The women offer drops of water and matthri to the moon, before breaking the short. In return, they request the moon, for his or her husband`s long life, continued smart health and protection. Time stands still, on this dayl......as ladies flip their animated faces to the moon, aglow among the flickering light-weight of a "diya", praying from deep within......... Karva Chauth offers an unmatched beauty, all its own!

In today’s day and age, when man has landed on the moon, it's going to appear strange to some of us, that ladies still pray to the moon! Such is that the strength and color of complete and sincere faith.
