Bundi: the Unexplored Destination of Rajasthan

Bundi is a famous historical city which lies in the Hadoti region in Rajasthan. The city of Bundi is located at a distance of 35 km far from Kota District and about 210 km from state capital Jaipur in the northwest part of India.

The city is particularly known for its ornate palaces, forts, and step well water reservoirs. In the local language the step well water reservoirs are known as baoris. The city is the governmental headquarters of district Bundi. The city encircles three sides of the Aravalli Hills and lies close to a narrow gorge. A large wall with four gates surrounds the city. In addition to a rich history, there are several points of attraction in the city of Bundi. These are as follows.

1. The Taragarh Fort

The ‘Star Fort’ or Taragarh Fort is the most imposing structure of the city. The fort was erected on the peak of sharp hillside in AD 1354. The Gagudi ki Phatak, the Lakshmi Pol and the Phuta Darwaza are the three gateways in the fort. In older days, the fort was well renowned for its large tunnels which cross the whole hillside. But now these tunnels are inaccessible due to unavailability of tunnel maps. The Taragarh Fort gives a panoramic view of the Bundi City and Aravalli ranges.

2. The Bundi Palace

The Bundi Palace is located close to the Taragarh Fort on the hillside. The fort is world renowned and best known for its generous traditional frescoes and murals. The Chitrashala that is the picture gallery of the Bundi Palace is open for the general public. The palace attracts a large number of foreign tourists.

In addition to this, the step wells or Bundi’s baoris are also very famous among the tourists. The Raniji ki Baori is most famous among these step wells. It was constructed in the year of 1699 and of historical importance. Apart from this, The Nawal Sagar is also famous among the foreign tourists. It is an artificial lake located in the middle of Bundi City. So this historical city of Rajasthan attracts a large number of tourists due to its various destinations.
