All Techies can Do is Burn Candles?

computer science researcher
What was the reaction of techies to the recent terror attacks in Mumbai? It was to burn candles.

We have some of the brightest programmers working for some of the largest IT services companies in the world and what do they do? They work on problems outsourced from companies abroad for 9 hours a day, 5 days a week. And then they spend 2 hours after the terror attack taking part in a candle march.

80% of the time of our technical community is spent in solving problems that have been outsourced from the US and Europe.

Maybe that is why terrorists seem to be able to strike us at will. Maybe that is why we could not even trace the mobile signals of theterrorists who were using their Blackberry's inside the hotel during the attack. Maybe that is why all we could dowas to watch CCTV footage after the carnage had taken place atChattrapati Shivaji Terminus. Maybe that is why we did not have systems in place to startautomated response sequences based on real time happenings. Maybe thatis why we didnt have a sonar and radar net around our coasts to trackenemy vessels.

And then we expect politicians to find solutions to terrorism? A politicians response is to buy more guns and arm the police. But our techies should know, it is already too late if you have to use the gun. The war on terror has to be fought to prevent attacks. Not react after they happen.

Aren't there technology solutions to fight terrorism. Indeed there are. Terrorists are technology savvy, but why isnt our response technology savvy? Well it is because our techies burn candles and then go back to solving other people's problems.
